Scrolls Launch Trailer – Creating the Music with Reason

by Josh Whelchel

The music in the Scrolls Launch Trailer was created in Cubase 6 and Reason 7. I wrote about this set up a little in my post, “DAW of the Future.” The setup is actually pretty simple. You are able to connect Reason with other DAWs with their ReWire tool, which makes it surprisingly easy to sync the projects. This connection is responsible for tempo & playback syncing, and carrying the audio stream of Reason outward to your primary DAW. The […]

Scrolls Music Discussion and Preview

by Josh Whelchel

Mattias and I have been working on the Scrolls soundtrack together, and really started digging recently around the alpha release.  One of the things we’re really striving to do is find the right pacing for a strategic CCG atmosphere.  Games can be paced anywhere from 5 to over thirty minutes (and way longer, of course) – and the rhythm of a conflict may change dramatically throughout. We initially wanted to stray away from traditional “epic” style battle pieces (such as […]

The Season of Sounds is Coming!

by Josh Whelchel

If all goes to plan, October, November and December should be riddled with soundtrack releases from yours truly. I finished up the soundtrack to Skn3’s Deli Stack about a month ago, and when the game is eventually released – so will the soundtrack. I also provided music for Kyle Pulver and J. Otto Seibold’s Jottobots – you should expect this game and it’s short musical accompaniment to be out soon. The soundtrack to Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion will be released on November […]

GANG Demo Derby

by Josh Whelchel

The first ever non-GDC G.A.N.G. Demo Derby is coming up on October 15th, and I’ve been asked to join the insanely talented Wilbert Roget, Dren McDonald and Jeff Essex on a panel to give feedback on a submission of demo reels from across the world. The Game Audio Network Guild (or, GANG) is a great resource for composers, sound designers, and voice over actors to collaborate, share success stories, tips, tricks, and hang out. GANG also offers a lot of […]

Scrolls Teaser-Trailer

by Josh Whelchel

Here is the trailer to Mojang’s next game Scrolls, which I am scoring with Mattias Häggström Gerdt. The music in the trailer is mostly by me, with some of Mattias’ in-game motif coming in the middle. This was put together pretty quickly and expect to hear more from both of our combined powers in the very near future. Source: Kotaku

Scoring Scrolls

by Josh Whelchel

It’s finally been announced that myself and great friend Mattias Häggström Gerdt will be co-composing the score to the upcoming game Scrolls by Mojang (of Minecraft fame).  Jakob Porser leads the project and things are certain to be amazing.  Check out the Scrolls website if you haven’t yet. If this is your first time here, I’m happy to meet you!  Please be sure to follow both Mattias and myself on twitter and say hello!
